What is is about the Fox TV show,
American Idol, that has so transfixed the public? What is about the show, & the people, that works?
I'll tell you what I like about it. Yes, I'm an
American Idol fan -- that's
my dirty little secret! I've always been one to root for the underdog, that person who has talent -- whatever field -- yet who seems to have little chance of having his or her voice heard. Then, along comes a vehicle that seems to give that chance . . . and even if it's a bit (or a lot) commercialized, there's still that glimmer of hope that the "everyday" guy or gal will get the chance to be recognized.
It's another take on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour theme, not a new idea. And that's likely why it's still so popular. Package it however it's packaged but, still, the concept is much the same. Folks from Podunk, America are allowed to shine -- and if they can handle the world they're thrust into, they often get that chance.
My addiction to
American Idol started the season that Taylor Hicks hit the big time. Taylor was not the average pop idol type and, for me, that was an added appeal. He was something of a renegade and if he could win this contest, he just might get his grasp at the golden ring. In my mind, he clearly had the talent.
And he did win. Notwithstanding the fact that his contract with the big record company, a byproduct of winning, has since been severed, Taylor Hicks is undeniably talented. He is no longer with the record company because of artistic differences -- he wanted to do it his way, they wanted him to do it their way. There are points in favor of both.
But the fact that he's again on his own, without that big record company deciding his every move, is probably a good thing for the likes of Taylor Hicks, a young man who walks -- and sings -- to the tune of his own drummer, in every way.
American Idol was a means to an end for Taylor, not the be-all, end-all. For more insight into this intriguing artist, please see my article on him, posted at:
